The Chiva is the iconic symbol of transport in Colombia, it is not only used to take groups of tourists around the city but also to transport suitcases, bags, sacks and even animals. The Chiva is a similar to a jeep and is the ideal vehicle to transport of passengers and goods through the mountains of Colombia.
Usually painted in vibrant colours, especially yellow, blue and red which are the colours of the Colombian flag. Inside there are the wooden benches that go side to side. Often the roof is also used to carry people, animals or anything / anyone which could not be accommodated inside.
The Chiva is not only a form of transportation in the Andes but they are also known as ‘chiva rumbera’ (party bus) which are one of the most popular tourist attractions of cities like Barranquilla , Bogota, Cali, Medellin and Cartagena. They are mostly used for city tours, but Chiva’s maybe better described as a bar on wheels as they often have band inside playing traditional live music. The Chiva is always full of laughter, music and alcohol that passes through the streets, it is a popular way to celebrate birthdays, anniversaries, meetings with friends or just have an alternative night out.
So if you haven’t done so already, next time you are in one of these cities why not hop on board one of these brightly coloured mobile disco’s and see the sights whilst dancing to tropical rhythms.
